1. The Art Critique process - Describe: First, you must describe what you see in the piece. You can identify the mediums and techniques used. Also you can identify the genre or style of the piece and explain everything you know about it. -Analyze: Determine what different lines and shapes are used. You can look for a center of unity or the point of the piece that "catches your eye". You can also look for unity through repetition in the piece. -Interpret: Next in the process, you should determine what is going on in the piece. What is the purpose of it and what is the artist trying to say through the artwork? -Decide/Evaluate: Lastly, you should explain if you like this piece and why. Also, you should figure out what the worst and best elements of the piece are. State whether or not you think the artist is successful and why. 2. Before Piece 3. Recent/improved piece The piece i chose for my more recent artwork is from our "Walk in my Shoes" project. I chose to critique this project because of the various skills i used to create it. I got the idea for my piece as soon as i heard the title for our project. I immediately thought of my favorite pair of shoes that i wear almost all the time. I wanted to start out with a streaked blue background, since it is my favor color. I then began to work on the body and shoes and make them proportional to each other. I painted the jeans to look like an actual denim wash and for the shirt i used the fabric technique i learned from our warm-ups. The different shadows and highlights allow for the layered look that the clothing in the piece has. I then worked on the suitcase with all of the clothes and items falling out. I also used the same technique for the clothes in the suitcase. The suitcase represents how i have moved various times over the years, and the items in the suitcase also represent things i like to do. I think these items really add to my theme of my history and complete the piece all together.

1/4/2016 0 Comments Mini projectFor the mini project, i chose to make a journal. In my free time, i enjoy writing a lot and i thought that it would be fun to have my own personal one of a kind journal to write in. I really enjoyed the process of making the journal as well as how it has turned out.
I believe the art criticism process is
-observe the piece -look at the shading and textures used -think about what the meaning behind the piece may be if the artist hasnt stated it previously. -ask the artist a question about their piece -give a helpful suggestion I did the portrait of my Grandpa. I thought that since he was a marine and had a lot of stories behind him, it would be interesting to create a piece that incorporates all of that. Also, i picked colored pencil because i thought it would be easier to add detail to the piece. The color and blending that the prisma colored pencils made also added to the texture of the picture. 1/4/2016 0 Comments Final exam (pick 3 questions)1. Is copying always plagiarism or is there a gray area? Explain your thoughts. -No, copying isnt always plagiarism, especially in context with art. Whenever an artist has a good idea, it usually comes from another great idea. If artists weren't inspired by other pieces, their wouldnt be very much variety in artworks. There is a difference between copying and making an idea your own, just like when we did our "inspired by" piece. This is the mug i made, inspired by another detailed mug i found. 2. What was the warm up or sketchbook assignment that you learned the most from? -The warm up assignment that i learned the most from was when we used acrylic paint techniques to create different textures. I thought it was very interesting that different strokes can variate the look of the piece so much. Also, i was able to see the advantages of using shadows and highlights in more ways than one. I used what i learned from this warm up in some of my other pieces. 3. Illustration Fridays have been completed almost every week this semester, do you feel this assignment helped you brainstorm for main project or helped you skill levels in any way? Why, or why not?
- Yes, I believe that Illustration Friday was a helpful assignment in terms of getting our imagination rolling. The idea of having a set topic and branching off from one word lets our creative side come to life. Also, the various mediums we could have chosen to use helped as well. The word for the illustration Friday below was "people". 12/18/2015 0 Comments Art show pieceThe piece i chose to write about was called "Hurtful Words" by Evelyn Velasco. This piece was on the deeper side and you can tell theres a lot of emotion put into it. The mediums used were pencil and pen. This artist wanted to get across the fact that words can hurt and sometimes even kill.
12/17/2015 0 Comments PrintmakingThe inspiration for my piece was Halloween. I really liked the spooky feeling the dark sky and moon gave off. Some difficulties were perfectly lining up the block with the paper in order to get the print just right. Also it took a while to print the entire piece due to all the designs i drew. If i were to re-do this project i would be sure to make a much simpler design with bigger pictures.
11/20/2015 0 Comments Collab Project with APThe process for creating this piece was fun. Working with a partner from the AP class allowed for many good ideas to be put into the piece. This process was fun and i liked that it was abstaract so we could go gather fun mediums we normally wouldnt use. My thought process for this piece was somewhat random. At first i just wanted to get some thin layers down and my partner and I agreed on a theme of purples. After we got the base down, i wanted to add some cool textures and colors. So we added things including ink and printmaking, ribbon, and more. Our theme of purple remained visible even after adding cool textures to the piece.
11/20/2015 0 Comments A Walk in my ShoesFor the walk in my shoes project, the textures warm up was very helpful. In my piece, i was able to use the smooth fabric texture for various things and it really made my piece come together. I decided to do my painting about how i have moved over the years. I have moved all over this general area and the suitcase shows that. Also, the things falling out of the suitcase represent different things that i like. I also painted my favorite pair of shoes. It was hard to really get the detail of the shoes in the piece. It was also difficult to get the different textures down for different objects in the piece. I would have to say the most successful part of my project is the highlighting and shading on the different clothes falling out of the suitcase. And also the music notes coming from my phone.
10/22/2015 0 Comments Locker installationFor the locker project; my partners Halle, Laurel, and I decided to do an outerspace theme. I personally was inspired to do this theme due to my intrest in space and everything out there. Also, we thought we would have a lot to work with if we chose this. It wasnt as difficult working in a small space as i thought it would be. Although, it would have given us more room for details if we had a larger space. We used various mediums in our project. The background was made out of paper(with painted white dots), and so were the colorful stars on the door as well as the comet on the right side. The comet was also colored with pastels to add a pop of color. We also made an alien and a UFO out of clay and painted them with acrylic paint. We then used paper pulp to add texture to the "planet" that the alien was walking on. On the left side there is a cardboard space ship that we painted and taped, the wing sticking out makes it look like its flying. Lastly, the planets were made out of painted balls of paper tied/taped to the walls.
10/21/2015 0 Comments Mentor projectMy mentor's name is Julio. We talked about many different things such as what styles and mediums we like. He hasnt given me his blog link yet but said he will give it to me soon. My favorite thing about him is that he really likes getting his ideas down on the canvas/paper and giving it meaning.
